The striking irony of the Bible teacher’s aphorism and the letter-writer’s diatribe is this: they are both theological in their own ways! Theology is any reflection on the ultimate questions of life that point toward God. Hence both the Bible teacher and the anonymous letter writer are theologians. We’ll call them “anonymous theologians,” because like most other people, they don’t realize that’s what they are. No one who reflects on life’s ultimate questions can escape theology.
